The whole trick with an energy monitoring systems (emr’s) or energy system is to make the invisible (energy consumption) visible. So far, in the market people can mostly find boring energy meters that show how much KWh you consume and how much does it cost to you. Although that the cost factor is important, it does not lead to energy consumption awareness. People can tell you how much they pay for their energy bills, but they cannot tell you how much energy their laptop consumes…
An inspiring source that I first run into is the http://flowingdata.com/2008/04/03/21-ecovisualizations-for-energy-consumption-awareness/ . 21 innovative ways to make the invisible, visible. If they achieve their goal, which is to make the user more aware of the energy that consumes, is a good question…But at least they offer an alternative…
- showing temperature, humidity, energy consumption and costs
- an electroluminescent wire with a phosphor layer that visualizes the energy
